When looking at house designs, the bedroom should be a pleasant place in which to sleep. If you live on a busy street, put the bedroom at the back. Put it as far away from distracting noises as you can. Insulation in the walls and draperies at the windows will help to shut out part of the noise.

A bedroom should be well ventilated, with windows on two sides of the room if possible, to insure a good circulation of air on hot sultry nights. Windows in bedrooms should be given careful study. If they are (more…)

How to Properly Clean Your Bedroom

A clean home is a happy home. There is nothing better than coming home from a hard day of work and relaxing in your bedroom. I love my home smelling fresh and looking as clean and tidy as possible. I am no clean freak but I do like having everything organized and dust free. Dust cause allergies and does not look attractive at all and it has been said that you are judged by the condition of your home. Unfortunately many of us live busy lives and do not have the time or the energy to clean as much as we would like to. One of the biggest mistake we can ever do is take a day to clean the entire house. We end up getting too overwhelmed. When we get overwhelmed we panic and we don’t finish what we start. Why not clean an entire room in one day instead of the whole house, which we know is impossible? In about a week you will have your home dust free and smelling and looking its best.

Start the first day of the week with the bedroom. We can’t have the energy and strength to clean if we are waking up to a disaster. Cleaning the bedroom will help us wake up full of energy because we are relaxed and feeling great. A dirty and cluttered bedroom will cause a great deal of anxiety and the dust will cause allergies. Let us first pick up all the clutter from the bedroom. Pick up toys, magazines, books, etc. and place them in a basket and push them to the side for later. Next, pick up all the dirty laundry and place the laundry in a laundry basket or hamper. I prefer wicker laundry baskets because not only can they hold several pounds of dirty clothes, they also look great placed in the room unlike plastic baskets. Have a plastic laundry basket just for the wet clothes because moister tends to weaken wicker baskets.

Remove all the bedding from the bed. Vacuum the entire mattress. This helps to keep it clean by the sheer fact that when it does get wet, there is less matter in the dirt to cause it to stain. It is also a good idea to flip the mattress over every 3 months. Baking soda can be sprinkled on the mattress and box spring about 30 minutes before vacuuming to freshen the mattress. Replace the dirty bedding with a fresh set of sheets. Fitted sheet, a bed skirt, pillowcases, comforter and duvet cover are my favorite. It is not necessary to use a bed skirt if the your comforter covers the box spring. Change your sheets at least twice a week to prevent dust mites and allergies. A duvet cover is a must because it can easily be washed and can change the look of the room in an instant. This will also give the room a fresh clean look.

Last dust furniture, corners, ceilings, walls, windows, fans and other areas that tend to pic up dust and cobwebs. Don’t forget to move the furniture and rugs. These are areas that many people tend to avoid. Rugs pick up plenty of dust. Make sure to vacuum and wash rugs weekly to avoid the accumulation of dust. Sweep the floor on a regular basis and mop at least 3 times a week to keep the floors looking clean and shiny. Put away the magazines, books and toys and you are done.

Feng Shui Bedroom Design Tips

People living in different parts of the world have different ways of living life. And, they also use different types of methods to make their life easier and better. Feng Shui is one such way of living life.

Feng Shui is a unique combination of science and art that focuses on enriching people’s lives in different ways. Feng Shui principles can be employed in the home in various ways. One of these ways is to use these principles while designing your bedroom to create a calm and serene environment that will contribute to a better living experience.

Amongst the most important things when it comes to Feng Shui bedroom design tips is the placement of the bed. Experts suggest that the bed should be kept in the command position. However, in order to understand what the command position is it is imperative to get better understanding of the philosophy itself.

Feng Shui has its roots as an ancient spiritual discipline. The philosophy is to make use of elements that will affect your internal landscape as well as your physical environment. These principles can be employed in your home as well as your office space. The objective is to nourish the heart and soul of the people that will be operating in the environment. This is done by harnessing the positive energy of the universe while blocking out the negative energy.

According to the philosophy, everything in the universe has a certain degree of energy known as “Chi”. The manner in which you arrange things in your home has an effect on the flow of this energy. It is important to have things in the right order and of the right materials in order to ensure that this energy flows in a continuous and harmonious manner so as to create a conducive environment. This is especially true when it comes to the bedroom.

Since the bedroom is where you’ll be spending your nights, you need to have a proper balance of the two opposite energies known as Yin and Yang. With regards to the placement of the bed, experts in Feng Shui suggest that the bed should be placed opposite the door but not right in front of it. This is what is known as the command position. The best command position is the point that is farthest away from the entrance on a diagnosed access. This will allow you to benefit from the flow of energy that travels through your bedroom.

It is also recommended to have a solid wall behind your bed as you place it in the command position. This will allow you to have a visual command of the entire bedroom space enabling you to get a comprehensive grasp of life in a symbolic manner. Placing your bed in line with the door is not recommended as it exposes you to excessive energy.

Above-mentioned are just some basic Feng Shui bedroom design tips that you can utilize to create an aesthetically appealing bedroom layout along with achieving a fine balance of positive and negative energy in the room.

Decorative Wall Painting Techniques

Do your walls seem dull and uninviting? Do you long for a cozy, welcoming room? Consider decorative wall painting techniques, such as sponging, ragging, stenciling or stamping. Even if you have no experience, you can brighten even the dullest room quickly and cheaply with one of these easy decorative wall painting techniques.

Before painting your room, pick out a color scheme for your walls. When you chose your paint, remember that many painting techniques use two shades of one color. If you are using one of the techniques that does use two shades of color, you can pick a darker color than you normally would chose for your base color, since the lighter top color will make the final result much lighter.

To sponge or rag a wall, paint on your base color and let it dry thoroughly. Then, dip your sponge or rag into the lighter paint color and sponge or drag the lighter color over the base coat until you are satisfied with the effect. If you are unhappy with your final result, you can repaint any areas that you don’t like with the base coat. Once the repainted area is dry, repeat the faux painting technique.

If you are considering using a decorative painting technique such as stenciling or stamping, you may just want to create a wallpaper effect by stamping or stenciling a simple design over your base coat. However, you may want to go a step further with your project and use stencils or stamps to create a faux brick or stone wall. You don’t need to be an artist to create one of these faux finishes. Just follow these simple steps. First, paint the walls with the color you chose for the mortar between the bricks or stones. Once the base coat is dry, stamp or stencil your bricks or stones over the base coat. Once the brick or stonework is dry, spatter a bit of the darker color over your faux art to give it depth and make it appear more realistic.

Creating faux effects such as making your walls look like they are made of plaster or suede can also really make your room stand out. You can easily learn how to create these seemingly difficult finishes at your local paint store. Paint bases that automatically give a suede or textured effect to the walls are a shortcut that even artists use to create fun finishes.

Finally, no matter which decorative wall painting technique you choose, remember that it is just a few layers of paint. You can always redo the finish on your walls as you learn more about the art of decorative painting.

Carpet Shopping for Your Bedroom

Many different types of carpet are available to choose from when you are shopping around for choices for your bedroom. Some styles work better than others for use in a bedroom. In addition to the style of your flooring, however, there are other things to consider such as the coloration, the quality of the materials used in the manufacturing, and what you can afford depending upon your financial situation. By considering all of these factors together, you will find the option that is best suited for you and your family, and you will enjoy the new flooring for a long time.

Coloration:

There are many sources that claim that there are specific rules for how you are supposed to decorate a home when it comes to colors. When you are deciding on carpets, there is no specific right way to do it. Some think that it makes more sense to buy carpets of a color that is lighter than the color of the walls. There are others that will tell you the exact opposite. The fact of the matter is, your personal preferences will play a larger factor than any of these “rules” ever will. In addition to this, the specific color scheme of your bedroom will play a large part. For example, if the walls are dark it might make sense to have a lighter carpet. If the walls are light it might make more sense for the floor to be darker.

When you are shopping around, you should pick several colors that you like and take swatches home so that you can envision what it would look like if the entire floor where the color of the swatch. A color that looks great at the store might not look good at all in your home depending on the lighting and the coloration. The opposite can be just as true, of course. Even a color that looks bad at the store might look good at home.

Another thing to think about is that the color will look different depending on the lighting. See what it looks like with the curtains open or closed, and at different times during the day. If you find that it looks good in all situations, that is the color that you will want to go with.

Style:

There are four different types of styles that are suitable for use in the bedroom. Carpets best suited for this purpose include frieze, textured, cable, and cut and loop.

Cable carpets are an option that is made from thick, long strands of yarn. It is possibly the most comfortable flooring to walk on, depending on your preference. In any case, it is the softest.

Cut and loops carpets include both looped yarn and cut yarn. This is used in order to create a pattern in the floor. They are known for staying fashionable for long periods of time.

Textured carpets are made from yarn that is weaved in such a way that it creates two slightly different colors based on the direction that it is viewed from. The advantage of this type of flooring is that footprints and vacuum cleaners do not leave marks on them.

Frieze consists of fibers that are twisted until they twist into themselves. It is very strong and long lasting. The fibers can be built so that they are very long or very short, depending on your preference.

Materials:

The best way to determine if the materials used in making different types of carpets are up to standard is to look at the warranty information. The longer you are covered under the warranty, the longer you can expect carpets to last. Make sure that you fully understand the warranty however. The number of years that carpets are covered is not a reliable indicator for what is covered under warranty. Make sure that everything is covered.

Cost:

Before shopping around, you will need to determine how much flooring you will actually need. To do this you will need to measure the bedroom in order to find out how much is needed. Only then will you know what options lie within your price range.

Once you know how much you will need, shop around in order to find the best deal. Unlike other flooring, carpets are priced by the square yard. If you want to compare the price of carpets to other flooring, you will need to divide by nine. Look for the best price. The cost of installation will play just as much a factor as the cost of the flooring itself.
